Romania’s defense ministry has strongly condemned Russia for breaching its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. The incident, which happened on September 13, highlights growing tensions in the Black Sea region and raises fresh concerns about NATO security.
In an official statement, the ministry called Russia’s actions “irresponsible” and a clear violation of international law. They pointed out that such moves not only threaten Romanian citizens but also put the entire NATO alliance at risk. “These incidents show Russia’s disregard for global norms and jeopardize collective security,” the statement emphasized.
The ministry reassured the public that Romania stands firm in its NATO commitments. It will keep working hand-in-hand with allies to monitor and protect its airspace. Defense teams are always on high alert, ready to act swiftly against any similar threats, they added.
What exactly went down? A Russian Geran drone, used in strikes on Ukraine, accidentally flew into Romanian territory. Two Romanian F-16 jets on routine patrol intercepted it over northern Dobruja. The drone lingered in Romanian skies for about 50 minutes, traveling from near Chilia Veche in the northeast to southwest of Izmail, before heading back toward Ukraine near Pardina.
Germany stepped in to help too. Forces at Mihail Kogalniceanu air base quickly launched two Eurofighter Typhoon jets. Together, the Romanian and German aircraft kept watch until 9:30 p.m., ensuring the situation stayed under control.
This isn’t an isolated event. It’s the second time in a week that a NATO country has dealt with Russian drone intrusions. Just days earlier, Poland reported similar violations, shot down several drones, and labeled them as provocations. That marked the first known case of a NATO nation firing on drones tied to the Ukraine war.
As the Russia-Ukraine conflict drags on, these airspace violations underscore the spillover risks for neighboring countries and the alliance as a whole. Romania and its partners remain vigilant to maintain regional stability.
