Russian forces launched powerful glide bombs and drones at Ukraine’s second‑largest city, Kharkiv, in an overnight attack that hit a busy hospital. The strike forced the evacuation of 50 patients and injured seven people, regional leader Oleh Syniehubov said.
The main targets, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, were energy sites – power plants, gas facilities and power lines – part of Moscow’s long‑term strategy to cripple Ukraine’s power grid and keep civilians without heat and water during the harsh winter. “Every day, every night, Russia strikes power plants, power lines, our gas facilities,” Zelensky posted on Telegram.
Zelensky wants the world to step in. He urged the United States, Europe, the G7 and other partners to send more air‑defence systems so Ukraine can protect its people and retaliate against Russian missiles. “We are counting on the actions of the US and Europe, the G7… to provide these systems,” he said.
On Friday, Zelensky is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington. The talks will focus on giving Ukraine sophisticated long‑range weapons that could counter Russian strikes. Trump has hinted that the US might allow Ukraine to use Tomahawk cruise missiles, a move that could push Moscow toward the negotiating table but would raise tensions sharply.
If the US approves Tomahawks, Ukraine would gain a stronger tool to hit Russian targets and could force Moscow to reconsider its hard‑line stance on a peace deal. Meanwhile, Russian long‑range drones and missiles continue to damage its own oil production and cause gas shortages, Zelensky warned.
As Ukraine stands one‑state‑wide against Russian fire, the international community’s response to supply air‑defence and advanced weaponry will be crucial in shaping the next stage of the conflict.
