A TEENAGE girl has allegedly been gang-raped by five Syrian asylum seekers in Germany. The 17-year-old girl told police she was attacked after being tricked into entering one of the suspect’s apartments in the town of Heinsberg.
Authorities from the Aachen public prosecutor’s office confirmed that five men have been arrested following the report of the alleged rape.
According to the victim, the group assaulted her early Saturday morning.
Police quickly launched an investigation, and within a day, German special forces raided an apartment in Heinsberg-Unterbruch, close to the Dutch border.
The teenager identified that apartment as the location of the alleged attack when she first filed her report.
Investigators stated that the suspects are between 17 and 26 years old and are believed to have been living in Germany for quite some time.
One of the men briefly escaped police custody but was captured shortly afterward.
Authorities added that the teenager is not German, though her nationality has not yet been confirmed.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility that she may have been in a relationship with one of the arrested asylum seekers, according to reports from Tages Schau.
Public prosecutor Katja Schlenkermann-Pitts said police are examining whether the five suspects may be connected to other criminal cases as well.
Meanwhile, Germany continues to confront a troubling rise in sexual assault incidents reported at public swimming pools this year.
In one particularly affected region, authorities recorded 74 alleged assaults over the summer, some involving children — including eight girls in a single day.
In June, police in Hesse detained four Syrian men aged 18 to 28 on suspicion of assaulting up to eight girls at a local swimming pool.
Just weeks ago, neighboring Netherlands faced shockwaves after a 22-year-old asylum seeker was arrested for allegedly murdering a teenage girl named Lisa.
The suspect is accused of fatally stabbing the 17-year-old, only four days after he had previously been detained on separate rape allegations, police said.
