The attackers reportedly told the victim she “does not belong here.” Gill fired back, saying, “She does belong here.” She emphasized that the Sikh community, like every community in Britain, deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued. “Racism and misogyny have no place in Oldbury, or anywhere in Britain,” she added, sending her thoughts to the victim, her family, and the wider Sikh community.
Gill, who represents the area as a Labour MP, knows the fears firsthand. Many of her constituents have reached out to her, worried about rising overt racism in the UK. “I hear you,” she reassured them. She’s already teaming up with West Midlands Police to catch those responsible and boost community safety. “No one should have to live in fear because of who they are,” Gill said. Her grandfather and great-grandfather even fought in the World Wars for the country. “They sacrificed for this country because they believed in it, and I’m proud of that heritage,” she said.
