Ukraine’s Bold Drone Attack Hits Russia’s Massive Oil Terminal
In a major escalation, Ukraine launched its biggest drone assault in months, targeting Russia’s largest oil terminal in the Bashkortostan region. The strike on Saturday set two tankers ablaze and halted crude oil loading operations at the Bashneft facility, which sits about 1,400 kilometers from the front lines. This comes amid Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia’s war machine by hitting key energy sites.
The attack damaged the plant, owned by Russian oil giant Bashneft, but caused no casualties. Radiy Khabirov, head of the Bashkortostan region, shared on Telegram that one drone hit the site while another got shot down. He noted minor damage and a fire that’s now under control. Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic moment: a drone hovering near the facility before exploding in a fiery blast, billowing thick smoke into the sky.
One of the burning tankers could hold up to 700,000 barrels of oil, according to reports. Firefighters quickly doused the flames, but it’s still unclear if oil loading has restarted at this vital hub. The Bashneft Ufa refinery, hailed by the Kremlin in 2016 as one of Russia’s biggest, churns out over 150 petroleum products and plays a huge role in the country’s energy output.
This isn’t an isolated hit. Ukraine has ramped up drone strikes on Russian refineries this summer, slashing refining capacity and driving up fuel prices back home. The goal? Cripple Moscow’s war funding by targeting its oil and gas lifeline. Despite international sanctions, countries like Turkey, Hungary, and Slovakia keep importing Russian oil, keeping the flow going.
On the same day, US President Donald Trump called on NATO allies to cut off Russian oil purchases entirely. He argued it’s the best way to pressure Russia into ending the conflict. As the Russia-Ukraine war drags on, these energy attacks highlight how Ukraine is fighting back smartly, even from afar.
