A dramatic clip that went live on Friday shows Ukrainian drones detonating a Russian oil tanker in neutral Mediterranean waters, in what Kyiv describes as an “unprecedented special operation.” The Security Service of Ukraine said the blow‑up occurred over 1,200 miles from Ukrainian shores.
According to officials, this is the first time Kyiv has carried out a strike in neutral waters. Until now, the Ukrainian security service had only claimed responsibility for drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea. The vessel involved was the Qndil, which was empty at the time of the strike and is said to have sustained critical damage.
Ukraine maintains that the hit posed no environmental threat, arguing the tanker was not carrying cargo during the incident. The ship had just unloaded oil at the Indian port of Sikka earlier that month and was heading back when the drones struck.
