US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump touched down at Winfield House in London on Tuesday, kicking off his official UK visit. The couple arrived amid high expectations for talks on trade, security, and global issues.
Before heading to the UK, Trump didn’t hold back when chatting with reporters about the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to step up and strike a deal to end the war. Trump stressed that Europe needs to pull its weight too, especially by ditching Russian oil imports despite their strong words of support for Ukraine.
“Well, he has to get going and make a deal. Zelenskyy will have to make a deal, and Europe has to stop buying oil from Russia,” Trump said bluntly. “They talk a big game, but they have to stop buying Russian oil right now.”
When asked if he’s putting real pressure on Europe and NATO allies to cut off these energy purchases, Trump doubled down without missing a beat. “I do. But here’s the problem—they’re still buying Russian oil. I don’t want them doing that, and they have to stop immediately. It’s not fair to us,” he added, highlighting the frustration over uneven efforts in the sanctions against Russia.
Trump called the Russia-Ukraine war a needless tragedy, pointing to the deep-rooted hatred between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a major roadblock. “The country is in trouble. But I will get it stopped. I’ve stopped seven wars in eight months. I thought this one would be the easiest, but it’s not. There’s tremendous hatred between Zelenskyy and Putin. But we’re going to get it done,” he promised confidently.
This comes hot on the heels of Trump’s Monday remarks, where he slammed NATO and European nations for not doing enough against Russia. “They’re not doing the job. NATO has to get together. Europe has to get together. Europe is my friend, but they’re buying oil from Russia. I don’t want them to buy it. And the sanctions they’re putting on aren’t tough enough,” Trump told reporters. He even offered to ramp up US sanctions, but only if Europe matches the intensity.
As Trump settles into his UK trip, eyes are on how these strong views on the Ukraine-Russia conflict and European energy dependence might shape upcoming discussions with British leaders. Stay tuned for more updates on this high-stakes visit.
