The U.S‑born rapper Wiz Khalifa was handed a nine‑month jail sentence by a Romanian court after police discovered more than 18 grams of cannabis on him during a July 2024 music festival.
Authorities say he was stopped in Costinesti while allegedly lighting a hand‑rolled joint onstage at the Beach, Please! Festival, and that he consumed some weed while performing.
The conviction was for “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption,” according to the Constanta Court of Appeal, following an earlier fine of 3,600 lei in April after a lower court ruled on “illegal possession of dangerous drugs.”
Romania’s drug laws are among the strictest in Europe, making personal‑use cannabis a punishable offense that can lead to a term of three months to two years in prison or a monetary penalty.
Whether authorities will request extradition is uncertain, as Khalifa is an American citizen who does not reside in Romania.
The 38‑year‑old Pittsburgh native first burst onto the scene with his breakout mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice” and famously lit a joint while singing “Young, Wild & Free” during his Romanian set.
