Indian and French fighter jets lifted off from Mont‑de‑Marsan on Monday, kicking off the 8th “Garuda 25” air exercise that runs from Nov. 16 to 27.
The Indian squadron flew Su‑30MKI multirole fighters, while France sent its Rafale jets. Both squadrons joined forces in simulated air‑to‑air battles, air‑defence drills, and joint strike missions, giving crews a chance to practice real‑world tactics side‑by‑side.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) said the exercise will boost “interoperability and deep defence cooperation” between the two air forces. It also sees the drills as a learning exchange, allowing pilots to share best practices and refine tactics.
Logistically, India used a C‑17 Globemaster III to bring the Su‑30s into France and an IL‑78 tanker to keep the fighters airborne for longer. The French squadron executed similar refuelling support using their own tankers.
“This operation demonstrates America‑India–France cooperation and will strengthen our ability to fight together,” the IAF added. French officials echoed that the exercise will improve joint operational knowledge and foster a stronger partnership between the Indian and French air forces.
With pilots flying cross‑border missions, “Garuda 25” showcases how friendly countries can train together, enhancing air‑combat readiness and deepening defence ties.
