Washington, Nov 4 () – Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney died on Monday at the age of 84. An obituary released by his family says he passed away in his sleep after complications from pneumonia and heart and blood‑flow problems.
Cheney’s wife, Lynne, and their daughters, Liz and Mary, were with him at the end. “Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old,” the family said, quoted by The Hill.
The former vice president served under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. He is remembered as one of the most influential vice presidents in recent U.S. history, helping steer the country’s “war on terror” after the September 11 attacks. Cheney’s time in office also saw him shape U.S. defense policy after the Cold War.
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 30, 1941, Cheney grew up in Casper, Wyoming. He began his public career with the Nixon administration in 1969, holding roles in the Cost‑of‑Living Council, the Office of Economic Opportunity, and the White House. In 1974, he joined President Gerald Ford’s transition team and later became Deputy Assistant to the President.
In 1975 Cheney was promoted to Assistant to the President and White House Chief of Staff, a position he held until the end of Ford’s term. Returning to Wyoming in 1977, he was elected to Congress as the state’s sole representative. He served six terms, chairing the Republican Policy Committee from 1981 to 1987, leading the House Republican Conference in 1987 and serving as House Minority Whip in 1988.
Cheney later became U.S. Secretary of Defense from 1989 to 1993. During that era he directed two major military campaigns: Operation Just Cause in Panama and Operation Desert Storm in the Middle East. President George H. W. Bush honored him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 for his leadership.
In his later years, Cheney was known for his hawkish conservative stance. He publicly criticized President Donald Trump and supported former Vice President Kamala Harris when she announced her presidential bid. “As citizens, we all have a duty to put our country above partisanship to defend our Constitution,” he said. “That’s why I will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Dick Cheney leaves behind a legacy of intense influence on U.S. foreign and defense policy and a complex political record that will be discussed for years to come.
