‘Friends for convenience’: Pakistan’s alliance with ISKP set to backfire and destabilise the region

Pakistan is losing ground in its fight against the Taliban and the Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and officials say that the country is now leaning on the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP).

A Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters that ISKP “is handled and run by Pakistan’s ISI.” The statement confirms India’s earlier claim that Islamabad is working with extremist groups to counter the Taliban.

Security experts in New Delhi are uneasy. ISKP was almost dismissed as a dying faction in 2024 by several international agencies. After heavy losses against the Taliban in Afghanistan, the group tried a comeback in both ground operations and online propaganda, but the effort crumbled.

The ISKP’s desperation has put Pakistan in a risky position. An Indian Intelligence Bureau officer said the alliance is “not natural” and that it could backfire. Pakistan’s army has already been weakened by attacks from the TTP, the Taliban, and the Balochistan Nationalist Army (BLA).

Under new ISI support, ISKP plans to re‑equip itself and fight the Taliban on Pakistan’s soil. More worrying is that the group aims to expand its reach into India. Officials warn that the ISKP could use improved recruitment, propaganda and training to launch attacks across the Pakistan‑India border, triggering a surge of terrorism in the region.

Pakistan’s short‑term gains could become long‑term losses. Past experience with the TTP shows that a temporary truce can turn into a deadly rivalry. Analysts argue that any escalation could spill beyond Pakistan’s borders, endangering neighboring countries and threatening regional stability.

The situation highlights the complex dynamics between Pakistan, the Taliban, ISKP and India – a power play that may boil over into more violence and undermine efforts to keep South Asia peaceful.
