Bangladeshi supporters in Switzerland rallied against human rights abuses under the current interim government, staging a protest near the United Nations in Geneva on Friday.
Members of Bangladesh’s Awami League organized the event next to the iconic “Broken Chair” sculpture outside the UN Human Rights Commission headquarters. They held a rally and formed a human chain to condemn killings, terrorism, and widespread violations happening back home since Muhammad Yunus took over as head of the interim government.
Protesters blasted the Yunus administration for serious abuses and called for urgent action to free Bangladesh from what they described as the “fascist Yunus clique.” The Switzerland branch of the Awami League led the demonstration, with President Jamadar Nazrul Islam presiding and General Secretary Shyamal Khan running the show.
In a virtual appearance as the chief guest, Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke to the crowd, highlighting the crisis. Other speakers included Nazrul Islam, president of the All-European Awami League, plus leaders from Awami League groups across Europe and Switzerland.
The rally wrapped up with protesters handing over a memorandum to the UN Secretary-General and the head of the UN Human Rights Commission. An official from the commission accepted the document on their behalf. M. Nazrul Islam, the All-European Awami League president and an Austria-based human rights activist, writer, and journalist, led the handover alongside Jamadar Nazrul Islam and Shyamal Khan.
The memo packed evidence of alleged crimes against humanity by the Yunus-led group, which protesters say illegally grabbed power in Bangladesh. It detailed attacks on minorities, Awami League leaders and activists, plus the looting and seizure of their homes and businesses. Expatriate Bangladeshis hope this will spotlight the ongoing turmoil and push for international help.
