German Foreign Minister Welcomes India’s Call for Peace in Ukraine
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for a quick peace deal in Ukraine. He spoke after his meetings with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. Wadephul said Modi’s support for peaceful resolution is very important, especially given the ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine.
He explained that for Germany and Europe, Russia’s war in Ukraine remains a major security challenge. “When India’s Prime Minister Modi talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin and mentioned the need for peace in Ukraine, it was a big step toward ending the conflict,” Wadephul said. He added that Europe, along with the U.S. and Ukraine, is working hard to help bring peace and stability to Ukraine.
Wadephul also highlighted India’s role. “I encouraged India to use its good relations with Russia to help bring peace back to Europe,” he said. He emphasized that peace is the foundation for security, freedom, and prosperity. Both India and Germany agree that maintaining peace and stability worldwide is crucial.
The German Foreign Minister reassured that Germany supports India’s fight against terrorism. He also talked about the importance of a rules-based international order, especially concerning maritime trade routes in the Indo-Pacific region.
He expressed concern over China’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific but stressed that Germany and India want to strengthen their cooperation in defense, security, and arms. They discussed joint military exercises and speeding up export licenses to boost Indo-Pacific engagement. Wadephul mentioned that last year, a German navy ship visited India, symbolizing growing ties between the two countries.
Looking ahead, Wadephul hopes that the German Chancellor will visit India soon. He stressed that both nations face shared challenges and need to work closely together.
Finally, he emphasized India’s global significance as a rising economic power, the world’s most populous country, and the biggest democracy. Both Germany and India see great potential in strengthening their partnership to promote peace, security, and mutual growth worldwide.
