German Leader Highlights US Involvement in Ukraine’s Security Plans
Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz has shared important thoughts on how Germany might get involved in Ukraine’s security in the future. During a recent virtual meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Merz said that Germany’s decision about sending troops or taking direct military actions depends heavily on how much the United States supports Ukraine too.
This online gathering was part of a larger group called the “Coalition of the Willing,” hosted by France. The goal was to discuss how countries can help Ukraine stay secure and work toward peace.
Merz emphasized that Europe is ready to play a key role by providing security guarantees to Ukraine once a peaceful solution is agreed upon. He pointed out that Germany is currently focusing on helping Ukraine by providing money, weapons, and training to Ukrainian forces. However, a decision on whether Germany will directly involve its military will come only when certain conditions are met, especially related to US involvement and ongoing negotiations.
He also mentioned the importance of working toward a peace summit that includes Ukrainian President Zelensky, aiming to achieve a ceasefire and bring stability to the region.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 countries, mostly European nations, have agreed to send troops to support Ukraine in the event of a future ceasefire with Russia. These troops will not be directly on the front lines but will be part of a “reassurance force” to provide support in land, sea, or air operations.
After the meeting, Macron said the countries are cooperating closely, including a recent call with US President Donald Trump, and that the US is expected to finalize its security commitments soon.
Ukrainian President Zelensky described this as a positive step forward. He also stressed that holding a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin—either one-on-one or with other countries—is essential for peace talks.
This coalition of about 30 countries, mainly from Europe, has committed to supporting Ukraine’s security and working towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The developments follow a virtual meeting where leaders discussed how to strengthen Ukraine’s defense and work toward peace.
