Belem, Brazil—Nov 23 (LatestNewsX)—UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell noted that climate diplomacy is still strong, even in a tough political climate. He said, “We knew this COP would take place in stormy political waters. Denial, division and geopolitics have dealt international cooperation heavy blows this year,” when he evaluated the outcomes of COP30 last Saturday.
Still, Stiell stressed that governments have reaffirmed their commitment to concrete action. “COP30 showed that climate cooperation is alive and kicking, keeping humanity in the fight for a livable planet, with the firm determination to keep 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach.” He added, “I am not saying we are winning the climate fight. But we are undeniably still in it, and we are fighting back,” while noting that 194 nations stood in “solidarity-rock-solid” to back climate work.
The world sent a clear message on the direction of climate endeavors: “The global transition to low greenhouse‑gas emissions and climate resilience is irreversible and the trend of the future.” Stiell highlighted new deals on a just transition, a plan to triple adaptation finance, and additional help for countries hit hardest by climate disasters, reporting Xinhua.
These actions, he said, will ensure that “every nation and every person can share in the vast benefits” of the clean economy. He cited achievements documented in the COP30 Action Agenda, such as big pledges for clean grids, protecting or restoring forests, land and oceans, and boosting resilience for hundreds of millions of people—an outcome he called “real‑world progress on the things billions of people care about most.”
Stiell urged that the globe must now speed up the roll‑out of national climate plans while keeping the momentum from Belem alive. “As we leave here, our job is to keep climate at the top of the agenda for another fifty years,” he said.
COP30 wrapped up last Saturday in Belem, the capital of the Amazonian state of Pará, after two weeks of negotiations under Brazil’s presidency, with the agreement on the final document, “Global Mutirao: Uniting humanity in a global mobilisation against climate change.”
