In Santiago, a key meeting took place between India and Chile, aimed at boosting ties between the two nations.
Secretariat for East, P Kumaran from the Ministry of External Affairs, met with Chile’s Vice‑Minister of International Economic Affairs, Claudia Sanhueza. They talked about ways to deepen trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

Both sides reaffirmed their wish to grow business links. The talks covered expanding trade, digital public solutions, and a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that would help both countries trade more freely and fairly.

Kumaran also spoke with the Chilean Undersecretary of Health about widening cooperation in health, pharmaceuticals, traditional medicines, and yoga. They agreed to cut red‑tape for medicine approvals and to work together on joint research and development in health sciences.

Business leaders from Chile were invited to stay in touch and explore trade in minerals, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and agriculture. Kumaran urged Chilean companies to visit India, a market known for its size and dynamism, and promised to speed up negotiations for CEPA.

Earlier this week, India and Chile held their ninth Foreign Office Consultations. They settled on strengthening cooperation in many areas—trade, investment, connectivity, health and pharmaceuticals, traditional medicines, science and technology, mining, defence, civil nuclear tech, education, space, agriculture, and people‑to‑people exchanges.

India called on Chile to consider long‑term agreements for mineral supplies. Both governments agreed to broaden ties into digital public infrastructure, innovation, and green energy. They also discussed easing visa rules for Indian professionals and business visitors, following President Boric’s announcement of a multiple‑entry visa for business people in April 2025.

The meeting, co‑chaired by Kumaran and Chilean Ambassador Rodrigo Olsen, Secretary General of Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reviewed progress on actions set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Gabriel Boric in April 2025, including speeding up CEPA talks for a swift conclusion.
