Nairobi, Oct. 24 – India’s top UN envoy, Adarsh Swaika, joined a lively celebration at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) to mark the UN’s 80th birthday. The event highlighted the progress the UN has made in eight decades, from peacekeeping to fighting poverty and fighting climate change.
Swaika said India remains a firm supporter of the UN and its multilateral spirit. “India is committed to peace, security, and progress,” he told the gathering. The Indian High Commission’s X post echoed that message, noting how the UN is “a living promise that bridges continents and inspires generations.”
UN Secretary‑General António Guterres posted a heartfelt video that day. He reminded everyone that the world still faces serious challenges—“escalating conflicts, climate chaos, runaway technology, and threats to our institutions.” Guterres urged people worldwide to unite and tackle problems that no single country can solve alone.
60‑year‑old UN Day, observed on Oct. 24, traces back to the 1945 entry into force of the UN Charter. Earlier, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, unveiled a commemorative postage stamp in New Delhi to celebrate the UN’s milestone. The stamp highlights the need for “reformed multilateralism” that reflects the hopes of the Global South and affirms India’s commitment to global cooperation.
India’s participation in UN Day events, from Nairobi to New Delhi, shows its ongoing support for international peace, sustainable development, and shared progress.
