New Delhi – India’s top diplomat, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, used the 8th India‑Japan Indo‑Pacific Forum to boost the growing friendship between the two countries. He said the partnership now matters more than ever for keeping the Indo‑Pacific region stable, free and open.

Jaishankar highlighted that India and Japan have become deeper partners over the past decades. “Our relationship helps protect strategic stability in the Indo‑Pacific and brings economic benefits to the world,” he told forum participants. The minister praised the Delhi Policy Group and the Japan Institute of International Affairs for hosting the discussion.

The minister also emphasized the recent talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi. “Modi’s visit to Japan in August set a clear joint vision for the next ten years. The eight priority pillars and a 10 trillion‑yen investment goal show how serious both governments are about this partnership,” Jaishankar said.

Security cooperation was another headline item. Jaishankar highlighted the Joint Declaration on security cooperation as a “notable milestone” that raises both countries’ defense ambitions.

Looking forward, Jaishankar urged the two democracies to focus on their strengths. “We should improve supply chains and invest in AI, semiconductors, critical minerals, clean energy and space,” he said. He added that the Indo‑Pacific Oceans Initiative—where Japan leads the maritime trade, transport and connectivity pillar—could give the partnership even more weight.

Jaishankar recalled a recent meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi at the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur. “Both sides agree that a deeper review is in our mutual interest,” he said. The minister concluded by stressing the support of think tanks, welcoming new ideas and wishing the forum a productive day.
