At the White House’s Congressional Ball on Thursday night, Melania Trump asked the gathered members of Congress to lend their help to a “new legislative initiative” she plans to introduce in 2026. She addressed lawmakers from both parties, recalling the success of the Take It Down Act—the bill that bars the spread of non‑consensual intimate images, including AI‑generated content that superimposes real people’s faces on pornographic footage.
In a brief speech, the first lady thanked everyone for their bipartisan support, noting that the act was the “greatest triumph” of her office this year. She urged Congress to stay excited about her forthcoming proposal, hinting that it is already under development.
The news caught President Trump off guard, but he responded with an emphasis on children’s welfare and bipartisan unity. He praised Melania’s dedication, noting that he would soon sign the act, after which she would join him with her own signature—an unprecedented moment for a first lady.
The Take It Down Act had been sponsored by Sen. Ted Cruz (R‑Texas) and passed the Senate unanimously before the House approved it 409‑2. Melania’s campaign involved a rare trip to Capitol Hill in March to lobby legislators. After the bill’s passage, the president passed the pen to his wife, saying, “She deserves to sign it. America is blessed to have such a dedicated and compassionate first lady.”
Melania has been lauded for getting the law signed early in Trump’s second term and is believed to be the first first lady to sign legislation alongside a sitting president. She explained that protecting Americans—especially young people—from digital abuse is “a powerful step forward” and called out the double‑edged nature of AI and social media, comparing them to candy that can be just as addictive as sugar but also weaponized to shape beliefs and affect emotions.
