Kabul/New Delhi – India announced on Tuesday it has upgraded its Technical Mission in Kabul to the status of a full embassy, effective immediately. The move comes after the Afghan foreign minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, visited India earlier in the month.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said the change shows a stronger intent to work closely with Afghanistan on all shared interests. “The Technical Mission will now operate as the Embassy of India in Afghanistan,” the ministry wrote. “The embassy will play a bigger role in helping Afghanistan build its infrastructure, support humanitarian aid and strengthen local capacity.”
During a meeting on October 10, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Afghan Foreign Minister Muttaqi in New Delhi. The two leaders talked about a range of issues—from regional stability to cultural ties—and agreed that India would deepen its engagement with the Afghan government.
“India respects Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Jaishankar. “Closer cooperation will benefit Afghanistan’s development and help keep the region stable.” He added that the upgraded embassy will make it easier to coordinate aid and development projects.
India has long emphasized the historic friendship between its people and those of Afghanistan. By returning its mission in Kabul to embassy status, India signals its commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s aspirations and needs.
The upgrade also comes after the Afghan foreign minister’s tour of India, during which both sides reaffirmed a strong partnership. The embassy’s new role will allow India to send more resources and expertise to Afghan projects, helping the country grow with its own priorities in mind.
