On a programme in Kolkata on Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee announced that her administration has raised 1.72 crore residents above the below‑poverty‑level threshold since 2011, the year the Trinamool Congress took office after 34 years of Left Front rule.

Speaking at a meeting where she released a progress report on her government’s achievements, the Chief Minister linked most of that progress to large‑scale job creation across the state. “From 2011 to date, we have been able to elevate 1.72 crore of people in the state out of the BPL level. Since 2011, there has been a new employment generation of two crore. The unemployment level has been brought down by 40 per cent. We have created six new economic corridors with the potential of attracting new investments to the tune of Rs 2,00,000 crore,” she said.

She pointed out that the majority of jobs created during this period came from the micro‑, small‑ and medium‑enterprise (MSME) sector, standing at 1.30 crore. In addition, the government has launched 12 lakh self‑help groups, and tax receipts have risen 5.31 times compared to 2011. The agricultural sector has seen a 9.16‑fold improvement, making West Bengal a model for the rest of the country.

On behalf of the state’s workforce, Banerjee noted that West Bengal had been the best at implementing the 100‑day programme under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). “After the Union government stopped releasing funds under the 100‑day job scheme, we introduced our own scheme on these lines, christened ‘Karmashree’. Under this project, jobs have been provided for 70 days a year,” she explained.

She also mentioned that the state has extended financial assistance to 1.31 million migrant workers who have returned from other states. Using the occasion, she criticized the Union government for failing to release funds for various centrally sponsored schemes.

Finally, Banarjee highlighted tourism success, stating that West Bengal now ranks second among all Indian states in attracting foreign tourists.
