In a shocking security lapse at Jaipur Central Jail, two inmates managed to escape early Saturday morning, prompting the suspension of 11 officials, including the deputy jailer. The incident highlights major concerns over prison security in Jaipur, where guards failed to notice the breakout despite being on duty.
The escapees, Naval Kishore Mahawar and Anas Kumar, cut through iron bars in their barrack late Friday night around 2 a.m. They roamed the jail premises for over an hour and a half while several guards slept, as confirmed by CCTV footage. Frustrated in their first try to scale the nearby women’s jail wall using a blanket—which tore—they grabbed an 18-foot plastic pipe from the garden area. Around 3:30 a.m., the duo used it to climb the 26-foot-high boundary wall near the visiting room and fled.
Both men got hurt during the daring escape. Anas Kumar fell from the wall, suffering a head wound, and police caught him later that day at his home in Malpura Gate around 4 p.m. His partner, Naval Kishore Mahawar, remains on the run, with Jaipur police and jail authorities launching a widespread search.
Authorities acted fast after the Jaipur jailbreak came to light. They suspended Deputy Jailer Ramcharan Meena, along with seven jail guards—including two women: Chief Constable Rekha Lakhera, Constables Anita Jajoria, Manoj Kumar Meena, Dharamveer Gurjar, Ratan Singh Rathore, Manoj Verma, and Maya Jat—plus three RAC personnel: Subhash, Ashok Kumar, and Tarachand. Departmental probes are now underway to figure out how this happened.
Jaipur Central Jail holds more than 2,100 inmates across 14 wards. Typically, each ward gets one guard, but Ward 10—for hardcore criminals—has two. Even with 15 to 18 staff on shift that Friday night, no one spotted the inmates’ movements or the cut bars until it was too late. This inmate escape in Jaipur has raised tough questions about guard vigilance and prison safety measures.
