11 years of Make in India: PM Modi hails transformative impact, says laid foundation for Aatmanirbharta

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the 11th anniversary of the Make in India initiative, calling it a game-changer for India’s economy and startup scene.
In a post on social media, Modi reflected on the launch back on September 25, 2014. “11 years ago on this day, the Make in India initiative kicked off with a clear goal: to boost India’s growth and unlock our entrepreneurial spirit,” he wrote. He added that it’s exciting to see how #11YearsOfMakeInIndia has built economic strength, sparked innovation, created jobs across industries, and paved the way for self-reliance, or Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The Make in India program aimed to attract investments, develop top-notch manufacturing hubs, and position India as a global manufacturing powerhouse. It also focused on making business easier through better ease of doing business rankings and skill-building programs.
Fast forward to today, and the results speak for themselves. India’s ease of doing business ranking jumped from 142 to 63, according to the World Bank, thanks to slashing red tape. Over the past decade, more than 42,000 outdated rules got simplified or cut, and digital tools replaced piles of paperwork, revolutionizing how businesses operate in India.
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been a standout success, fueling rapid growth in manufacturing. Experts now predict India’s manufacturing sector will hit a $1 trillion milestone by fiscal year 2026. In August 2025, the manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) reached 59.3—its highest level in 17 years—showing strong momentum.
Recent GST reforms have given Make in India an extra push. By dropping taxes to zero on everyday essentials and cutting rates on many goods, these changes have made Indian products more competitive on the world stage, helping local businesses thrive.
