Doctors at AIIMS New Delhi have pulled off an incredible feat: a life-saving keyhole lung surgery on a tiny 50-day-old baby weighing just 2.5 kilograms. The infant, rushed in from Bihar, battled a rare condition called congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM), where part of the lung develops abnormally and blocks normal breathing.
This wasn’t an easy case. The malformation grew huge on the right side of the baby’s chest, squeezing the left lung and leaving him struggling for air. By the time he reached AIIMS, things were dire—he needed immediate ventilator support to survive. The pediatric surgery team admitted him, stabilized his condition, and kept a close watch around the clock, thanks to the dedicated residents who handled every step.
Instead of a big open-chest surgery that could mean a long, painful recovery, the doctors went for a smarter option: thoracoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery. They made tiny cuts—just 3 to 5 millimeters wide—and slipped in special tools and a mini camera to remove the damaged lung part through a one-centimeter incision. It sounds high-tech, and it is, especially for such a fragile newborn.
The operation hit a scary snag when the baby’s oxygen levels dropped sharply. But Dr. Rakesh Kumar, the anesthesia expert, stepped in with quick thinking and steady hands to keep everything under control, allowing the team to finish safely. Leading the charge was Dr. Vishesh Jain, a professor in pediatric surgery at AIIMS. “Operating on a 50-day-old, 2.5-kg baby like this really tests the limits of minimally invasive techniques,” Dr. Jain said. He credited the win to teamwork between surgeons, anesthesiologists, and AIIMS’s top-notch facilities.
Dr. Sandeep Agarwala, head of the pediatric surgery department, couldn’t hide his pride. “This shows how we bring advanced care to even the tiniest, most vulnerable kids. It’s all about our team’s unbreakable spirit,” he added.
After the surgery, the little one bounced back fast. He started breathing on his own without the ventilator, bringing huge relief to his desperate parents from Bihar. This success story marks a milestone—likely the youngest and smallest baby in India to get such a complex thoracoscopic lung surgery, especially while on ventilator support beforehand. The minimally invasive method meant less pain, quicker healing, and a brighter future for this fighter.
