Assam Pushes Back 20 Bangladeshi Infiltrators at Border, CM Sarma Vows Zero Tolerance

Guwahati: In a firm move against illegal immigration, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that security forces turned back at least 20 Bangladeshi citizens who tried to cross the international border into India. This happened on Thursday, highlighting the state’s tough stance on border security.

Sharing the update on his X handle, CM Sarma wrote, "Pushed back another set of 20 habitual offenders back to their base in Bangladesh. Our tolerance level to illegal immigrants is ZERO, and will continue to be as such." His words underscore Assam’s zero-tolerance policy toward Bangladeshi infiltrators attempting to enter Indian territory.

The Assam government has ramped up efforts to stop infiltration from Bangladesh. CM Sarma frequently warns about the risk of changing demographics in the state due to these illegal crossings. He blames past Congress governments for allegedly sheltering Bangladeshi infiltrators, saying they have taken over land belonging to indigenous communities.

Sarma also clarified that even if some infiltrators manage to get Aadhaar cards, they can’t simply join Assam’s voter list. "There’s no way people cross the Bangladesh border illegally and enroll as voters here," he stated. Security forces catch many of them quickly and push them back within hours. For instance, most arrests happen around 5 a.m., and by 9 a.m., they’re already back across the border. "In just two or three hours, they can’t register to vote," he added.

Still, the Chief Minister wants everyone to stay alert. "We plan to roll out more measures to detect illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, in case a few slip through security," he said. This double vigilance aims to plug any gaps in border protection.

CM Sarma linked the rise in attempts to Bangladesh’s growing poverty after the unrest that led to Sheikh Hasina’s government falling. Interestingly, he noted that most of those trying to cross for jobs belong to the Muslim community, challenging common fears about who the infiltrators are.

Assam’s pushback operations show the state’s commitment to safeguarding its borders and protecting local people from illegal immigration threats. With ongoing vigilance, the government hopes to keep such incidents in check.
