Supreme Court to Hear Bail Pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam in 2020 Delhi Riots Case
New Delhi, Sep 19: The Supreme Court will soon decide on the bail pleas of former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, along with Meeran Haider and Gulfisha Fatima. This hearing connects to the high-profile 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. It kicks off on Friday before a bench led by Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria.
The case got delayed from its original September 12 slot. Justice Kumar explained that he received the files at 2:30 a.m., which didn’t give enough time to go through everything. Top lawyers like Kapil Sibal, Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, and C.U. Singh represent the accused.
These four face serious charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA. Police link them to a bigger plot behind the deadly communal clashes in North-East Delhi back in February 2020. That violence killed 53 people and injured over 700 others, all tied to protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Earlier this month, on September 2, the Delhi High Court turned down bail for Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and seven others, including Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Athar Khan, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, Shadab Ahmed, and Khalid Saifi. A separate bench also rejected bail for Tasleem Ahmed.
Delhi Police fight hard against these bail requests. They argue the 2020 Delhi riots weren’t random—they stemmed from a planned conspiracy. Officers say the accused actively fueled the chaos with a "sinister motive."
The High Court called the roles of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam "serious" at first glance. It highlighted their speeches, which seemed to stir up crowds with communal tones. Sharjeel Imam, arrested in 2020 under UAPA, faces claims of leading the incitement.
Everyone watches closely as the Supreme Court weighs in on this key Delhi riots case. Will bail come through, or will the legal battle drag on? Stay tuned for updates on Umar Khalid bail plea, Sharjeel Imam case, and the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy.
