In Indore, Madhya Prachal, a shocking incident has brought the city’s transgender community into the national spotlight.
On the night of Wednesday, 24 trans people from the Nandlalpura neighbourhood tried to kill themselves by swallowing phenyl, a toxic household cleaner. The act was a desperate response to deep‑rooted disputes and accusations of sexual assault that have plagued the community.
Police quickly moved to stop the crisis. They arrested Sapna, a local transgender leader, and are searching for Raja Hashmi, who fled the scene. Two reporters who were present also came under investigation, but authorities have not confirmed their involvement yet.
All the victims were rushed to Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital. A senior police officer, Additional District Magistrate Roshan Rai, said the medical team worked hard to stabilize the patients. Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Madhav Hasani confirmed that most of the men and women have improved, with 22 now out of danger. The remaining two remain in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
“It was a severe case of poisoning,” said Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, dean of the hospital. “We are giving constant care and expect a full recovery for most.”
The incident follows a heated fight between two factions of the local transgender community. Police are reviewing forensic evidence and witness statements to understand what triggered the tragedy.
“The safety and support of our vulnerable communities are paramount,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Singh. “We will investigate all claims thoroughly.”
As Indore grapples with the aftermath, the transgender community is left to question whether this tragedy will prompt lasting change or fade into another news headline. Their pleas for justice and better support systems echo louder than ever.
