During the Diwali fireworks in Hyderabad and its suburbs, at least 47 people were injured. 32 of them went to Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in Mehdipatnam, where doctors treated 20 children and a mix of serious and minor wounds.
Afreen Khader, an assistant professor at the hospital, said 18 patients had serious injuries, while the rest required only first‑aid. A team of seven doctors worked through the night. Most people were sent home after quick treatment, but those with severe cuts or burns were admitted for closer care.
The injuries weren’t limited to the eye hospital. Residents in other parts of the city and nearby villages also rushed to private hospitals after fireworks exploded near them or struck them as they tried to light new displays.
Doctors warned the public to follow safety tips when using fireworks. Simple precautions—wearing eye protection, keeping a safe distance, and avoiding piles of unused sparklers—can reduce the risk of injury.
In addition to the injuries, several fire incidents broke out during the celebrations. Nobody was hurt, but the fires caused significant property damage.
A function hall on Jambagh Road near Sultan Bazar Police Station caught fire, destroying decoration materials and forcing the police to beat it down quickly. In Begumbazar, an apartment close to a cracker shop burned, and firefighters extinguished the flames without damage to nearby homes.
A scrap godown in Bahadurpura was set ablaze, forcing three fire engines to rush to the spot. Two cars were heavily damaged in the blaze. Another flare in Mangalhat sparked a fire at a kite‑making unit, destroying kites and the materials used to make them.
Police traced all four fires back to stray or unusually bright firecrackers. Cases were filed and investigations are underway to determine who was responsible and how future accidents can be prevented.
