In a heartbreaking turn of events during a festive Ganesh Visarjan procession, a speeding goods truck plowed into the crowd in Karnataka’s Hassan district on Friday evening. The accident claimed at least eight lives and left more than 20 people injured near the Mosale Hosahalli railway gate.
Eyewitnesses and police reports say the chaos unfolded as villagers from Mosale Hosahalli, Hirehalli, and nearby areas joined the lively Ganapati immersion celebrations. The truck driver, identified as Bhuvanesh, lost control due to reckless speeding. First, the vehicle hit a bike, then crashed into a divider, before slamming straight into the procession participants.
Four people died instantly at the scene, while four others battled for their lives and passed away in hospitals. Among the victims, five were young engineering students, adding to the sorrow of this devastating Ganesh Visarjan accident.

Angry locals dragged the driver out of the truck and beat him before police intervened. Bhuvanesh is now recovering in a hospital under custody. The identities of the deceased are still being confirmed, but the loss has shaken the entire community.
Rescue teams acted quickly. Authorities moved the bodies to the local community health center’s mortuary for post-mortems. Seriously injured victims received treatment at government hospitals in Hassan city and Holenarasipur town, while others got care at nearby facilities.
Senior police officers arrived soon after to manage the situation and start investigations. The Gorur police are leading the probe into this tragic truck accident during Ganesh Visarjan, focusing on the driver’s negligence.
The incident drew strong reactions from political leaders. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who hails from the region, shared his grief on X (formerly Twitter). “I’m deeply shocked by this horrific accident at the Ganapati immersion in Mosale Hosahalli, Hassan Taluk,” he wrote. “It’s heartbreaking that devotees lost their lives to a runaway truck. My prayers for the departed souls and strength for their families. I urge the state government to ensure free, top-notch treatment for the injured.”
JD(S) MLA and former minister H.D. Revanna, his son and JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna, and Hassan MP Shreyas Patel also hurried to the spot. Revanna didn’t hold back, blaming the police for the tragedy. “This happened because of their failure to control traffic during the procession,” he said sharply.
As Hassan mourns this unfortunate Ganesh Visarjan mishap, authorities promise a thorough investigation to prevent such accidents in future festivals. The community rallies together, offering support to the grieving families amid the festival’s joy turning to sorrow.
