In a refreshing change of tune, Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj has given a shout-out to Indian Railways for stepping up its game on cleanliness, especially at New Delhi Railway Station.
Bhardwaj, known for his sharp criticisms of the railways over safety issues and train accidents, shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) Thursday to highlight the improvements. He specifically praised Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the ministry for keeping things spotless.
“I often call out the Railway Department and Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on those frequent train accidents, and that hasn’t changed,” Bhardwaj said in the video. “But today, I stopped by Platform No. 1 at New Delhi Railway Station and checked out the sleeper class waiting room. I even used the toilet, and it was way cleaner than I thought it’d be.”
He noted the restroom wasn’t just tidy—it had a dedicated staff member on hand to keep it that way. “When something’s done right, we should give credit where it’s due,” Bhardwaj added. “There’s real progress here on hygiene.”
His X post struck a similar note: “The railway department holds a sad record on rail accidents. But seeing something good today, I felt I should praise them too.”
When one user asked about fees for the waiting room, Bhardwaj kept it light with a reply: “No one charged me, so I don’t know, brother. Is it pricey?”
This isn’t Bhardwaj’s usual stance. Earlier this year, he slammed the Railway Ministry for dragging its feet on modernizing the 90-year-old Pathankot-Joginder Nagar line, where plans to switch from narrow gauge to broad gauge have stalled for years. He’s long pushed for better safety reforms and upgrades to prevent accidents.
Now, this nod to positive changes from a key opposition figure feels like a rare bit of cross-party goodwill, showing that even critics can spot and celebrate wins in Indian Railways’ push for better cleanliness and station maintenance.
