Chaitanyananda Saraswati, the man accused of molesting 17 girls at an educational institute in Vasant Kunj, has filed a bail application while in court‑custody, the Patiala House Court said on Monday. The hearing is set for tomorrow before Additional Sessions Judge Atul Ahlawat.
Saraswati was arrested in Agra on September 27 and brought to Delhi a day later. Delhi Police produced him before the court on September 28 and gave him a five‑day custodial remand, followed by a 14‑day remand ordered on October 3. He has remained in judicial custody since then, with his release date set for October 17.
The spokesperson for the court noted that Saraswati’s earlier plea for anticipatory bail in a related financial‑irregularities case was denied. Now, while the bail petition is being considered, the court has asked police to provide a detailed reply on two separate issues.
First, Saraswati applied for legal assistance to obtain a sanyasi robe and spiritual books. The court directed the police to file a comprehensive response citing the jail manual’s provisions. It will hear the matter again on Monday.
Second, the accused sought a copy of the seizure memo that details items taken from his house. The court again directed the police to file a proper reply, and this application is scheduled for hearing on Friday.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Animesh Kumar pointed out that the Investigation Officer’s reply, which failed to mention any jail manual provisions about clothing and books, was insufficient. He asked whether there was an actual prohibition on clothing or religious texts for a prisoner.
In speech, the accused’s counsel, Advocate Manish Gandhi, argued that the jail manual does not forbid inmates from wearing clothes of their choice. He also requested the court to order extra bedding for the 65‑year‑old Saraswati, who suffers from health issues.
The case is gaining attention due to the seriousness of the allegations and the high profile of the accused, who was once a respected spiritual leader. As the Patiala House Court prepares to decide on the bail petition tomorrow, all eyes remain on how the charges and custody conditions will be resolved. The outcome will shape how Delhi’s legal system handles allegations of sexual misconduct involving prominent figures.
