Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir Sparks Row with Social Media Post on Nepal-Like Uprising in India
Kolkata, Sep 11: Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir from Debra in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district is back in the spotlight. The former IPS officer, who’s faced controversies before, has stirred up a storm with a social media post hinting at a Nepal-style uprising in India.
In a Bengali post on Facebook, Kabir didn’t name Nepal directly but asked when a "spontaneous mass uprising" like the one in the Himalayan nation would hit India. He targeted "dictators" and "heads of corruption," calling for their unmasking through non-violent means. "When will the same thing happen to the dictators of our country? The heads of corruption will be unmasked through non-violent means! When? When? Do you also dream like me?" the post read.
The comments drew sharp backlash from all sides. Many slammed the elected leader for such remarks, questioning how a public representative could talk about uprisings. Trinamool Congress leaders also warned Kabir that his post went against party lines. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stayed silent on the Nepal protests, saying it’s an external affairs matter for the central government to handle first.
Facing the heat, Kabir quickly clarified in the comments section of his post. He stressed that any uprising in India must stay non-violent, unlike the violent events in Nepal. "I am a peace-loving person and will always follow the law. Violence and riots are undesirable in any circumstance. But our country also needs an uprising, which should be silent and non-violent in nature. That will wipe out corruption, nepotism, and division between people in our country. Educated and honest people will be at the forefront," he wrote. Kabir added that his words didn’t target any specific political party.
This isn’t Kabir’s first brush with trouble. Back in July, a viral video showed him assaulting Pralay Chakraborty, an assistant registrar at West Bengal University of Health Sciences, right in the official’s office. The clip shocked many and put the MLA under fire.
Earlier this year, Kabir landed in hot water again after visiting the home of a minor girl killed in a bomb blast in Nadia’s Kaliganj. The girl, Tamanna Khatun, died from splinter injuries during a Trinamool victory procession celebrating Alifa Ahmed’s win in the bypolls. Kabir offered money to the victim’s mother, which didn’t go down well. The party hit him with a show-cause notice for that episode.
Kabir’s latest controversy has everyone talking about Trinamool Congress controversies and political uprisings in India. As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen how the party responds.
