Northeast States Rally to Help Flood-Hit Himachal Pradesh
In a heartwarming show of unity, two more BJP-ruled states from Northeast India—Assam and Arunachal Pradesh—stepped up on Wednesday to aid Himachal Pradesh’s flood relief efforts. Each contributed Rs 5 crore to the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, joining Tripura in extending a helping hand to the flood-affected people.
Assam’s Power, Employment, and Medical Education Minister Prasanta Phukan personally handed over a Rs 5 crore cheque to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at Himachal Sadan in New Delhi. During their meeting, Phukan assured Sukhu that Assam stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Himachal’s residents in this tough time. Sukhu expressed his gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the people of Assam for their generous support amid the crisis.
Phukan wasn’t alone—Assam Bhawan Assistant Resident Commissioner Bikram Newar joined him for the handover. Just a day earlier, on Tuesday, a truck packed with essential relief items like utensils and mattresses rolled out from Assam House in Delhi. The event saw Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, and several MPs in attendance, highlighting the strong inter-state bond.
Assam CM Sarma shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "Assam stands firmly with the sisters and brothers of Himachal Pradesh in these testing times. 3.5 crore people of Assam extend their prayers and solidarity in these times." This gesture underscores the spirit of Northeast India flood relief contributions.
Over in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced a Rs 5 crore donation from the state’s Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The funds will go straight to the Himachal Pradesh Aapda Raahat Kosh–2025, a special fund set up by the Himachal government to gather resources and provide massive relief to flood victims.
Khandu voiced his deep worry over the floods’ destruction and hardship. "Natural disasters don’t see borders. At such times, we Indians must help our brothers and sisters in need. This contribution from Arunachal Pradesh is a small way to ease the pain in Himachal," he said in an official statement. He also praised Himachal’s Aapda Raahat Kosh–2025 campaign for quick aid, rehab, and support to affected families, noting how Arunachal’s help will strengthen this collective push.
This support from Arunachal Pradesh highlights growing Northeast states’ solidarity with Himachal Pradesh flood victims.
Tripura led the way earlier, donating Rs 5 crore to the fund on September 6. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Manik Saha and other leaders flagged off five vehicles loaded with relief materials worth nearly Rs 50 lakh from Agartala. Saha shared on X, "The devastating floods have hit Himachal hard. My condolences to the grieving families. I spoke with Himachal’s CM to offer our support. On behalf of Tripura’s people, we stand with Himachal. We’re contributing Rs 5 crore to their relief fund."
These acts of kindness from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura show how Indian states come together during natural disasters like the recent Himachal Pradesh floods, fostering hope and recovery for those in need.
