BJP leaders Sambit Patra and Ajeet Gopchade landed in Imphal today to gear up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s possible visit to Manipur on September 13. As the BJP’s Northeast in-charge, Patra came with Gopchade, the party’s Manipur head and a Rajya Sabha member. They’re here to plan everything for the big event.
A local BJP leader shared that the duo will meet party workers, MLAs, and officials behind closed doors at the state headquarters. The focus? Sorting out arrangements like stages, decorations, and security for the PM’s trip. State BJP chief Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi welcomed them at the airport, but Patra and the team skipped media questions on the visit details.
Preparations are in full swing across Manipur. In the capital Imphal and the tribal district of Churachandpur, teams are busy building stages, sprucing up spots, and tightening security. A senior official mentioned that district admins are setting up webcasting so everyone can watch the PM’s program live.
On the security front, Churachandpur’s district magistrate Dharun Kumar S issued an order on September 4, banning drones, UAVs, balloons, and other flying objects in the entire area. It’s now a strict “No Drone Zone” to ensure safety during the VVIP visit.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has been active too. He met five MLAs from the Kuki-Zo communities in Churachandpur on Tuesday to discuss the PM’s potential stopover. Earlier, on September 7, he chatted with BJP MLAs from Imphal Valley, including ex-Chief Minister N Biren Singh, state BJP president Sharda Devi, and top officials like the Chief Secretary, DGP, security advisor, and Home Commissioner.
Word is, the Prime Minister’s Office hasn’t given the final green light yet. But reports suggest PM Modi will head to Aizawl in Mizoram first to launch the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway project. From there, he’ll likely visit Imphal and Churachandpur in Manipur.
This would mark PM Modi’s first trip to Manipur since the ethnic clashes between Meiteis and Kukis erupted in May 2023. Everyone’s watching closely as the state ramps up for what could be a key moment.
