In Chennai on October 22, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) flagged a severe weather warning for many parts of Tamil Nadu. Red and orange alerts were issued for eight and ten districts, respectively, as heavy rain is expected across the northern coast and the Cauvery Delta.

Opposition leaders took the opportunity to push the ruling DMK government to act fast. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami urged officials to “take precautionary measures on a war‑footing basis.” He warned that the deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal could dump intense rain on Chennai and neighbouring districts. “Stay alert and follow safety advisories,” he said, and asked AIADMK cadres to help residents and coordinate with local authorities.

BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran echoed the call. He highlighted two low‑pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal that are driving the forecast for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. “The DMK must act beyond video conferences and prepare for any disaster,” he added, pointing to a recent virtual review by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

Both leaders urged fishermen and the general public to exercise caution during the heavy rains and stressed the need for a full emergency response to the intensifying northeast monsoon.
