Chennai, Tamil Nadu – A senior member of the AIADMK, former minister R.B. Udayakumar, took to a press conference in Chennai on Tuesday to slam the DMK government for missing a big tech deal. He said the state has slipped behind in attracting a new Google AI and data‑centre hub, a project that could have put Tamil Nadu at the heart of India’s digital future.
Udayakumar pointed out that Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google who is of Tamil origin, had never been officially invited by the current administration to set up the company’s AI infrastructure in the state. He said the DMK’s lack of action meant the project went to neighboring Andhra Pradesh, where the government is keen on tech investment.
“The missing opportunity isn’t just money – it’s a chance to become a national centre for AI, data analytics, and digital services,” he warned. “A lot of jobs and a stronger economy could have been here if the DMK had taken the initiative.”
He accused the current regime of abandoning the high‑growth investment climate that AIADMK had built, blaming “lack of foresight and engagement” with global giants. According to Udayakumar, several other states are already moving ahead, while Tamil Nadu is left in the dust.
The comments came just days after a Google Cloud global executive Tom Kurien announced plans to build its biggest AI and data‑centre hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The new facility will feature a large subsea cable landing point that will link the city to Google’s worldwide network, creating thousands of skilled jobs and pulling in ancillary industries.
Tech analysts say Tamil Nadu’s loss signals a urgent need for a fresh, dynamic investment strategy if the state wants to stay competitive as a South‑Indian tech hub. The DMK government now faces pressure to quickly turn the tide and demonstrate that it can attract high‑value projects in a rapidly growing digital economy.
