AIIMS Delhi has just rolled out a cutting-edge Da Vinci Surgical Robot for hands-on training at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine Facility (SET). This exciting addition, brought in through a partnership with Intuitive Surgical, is set to boost robotic-assisted surgery training right here in the heart of India’s top medical institute.
What makes this special? AIIMS New Delhi now stands alone as the only place in India with two distinct surgical robots dedicated purely to training. They already had the Hugo training robot from Medtronic in the SET facility, and now the Da Vinci joins the lineup. This means more doctors, nurses, and students from AIIMS and beyond can dive into advanced skills without leaving the country.
The SET facility is a buzzing hub for medical trainees and experts. It offers top-notch tools like manikins, simulators, and trainers for practice sessions that are safe, supervised, and pressure-free. With the new Da Vinci robot in place, opportunities skyrocket for learning robotic surgery across key areas such as urology, gynaecology, general surgery, surgical oncology, and head and neck procedures. Surgeons and healthcare teams will gain the tech-savvy skills needed to handle these precision tools confidently.
This move is a game-changer for robotic surgery in India, especially since it’s happening at a leading government hospital. It promises to speed up the growth of minimally invasive techniques that lead to quicker recoveries and better patient outcomes.
AIIMS Director Dr. M. Srinivas shared his excitement at the launch: “This training centre cements AIIMS Delhi’s role as a pioneer in surgical education and innovation. Robotic-assisted surgery is on the rise in India, and by training our surgeons on these advanced systems, we’re boosting precision, cutting down recovery times, and lifting patient care nationwide.” He added a key point—earlier, doctors had to jet off abroad and shell out big bucks for such training, but now it’s all available in-house.
Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager at Intuitive India, pledged full support to make the most of this Da Vinci system for training.
Dr. Amlesh Seth, Professor and Head of Urology at AIIMS Delhi, highlighted the impact: “Robotic surgery revolutionizes procedures with better precision, control, and visibility. This centre lets our seasoned surgeons mentor the next wave of experts, giving them the skills and confidence to push surgical standards. Residents get early hands-on practice in a controlled setup, building a strong base in minimally invasive techniques and prioritizing patient safety before they go solo.”
This marks the first time an advanced Da Vinci system from Intuitive Surgical has been installed for training at a government medical college in India, paving the way for wider access to robotic surgery education.
