Doctors at AIIMS Delhi’s Department of Surgical Oncology, part of the Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital, just rolled out the cutting-edge da Vinci surgical system. This move boosts access to advanced cancer care in New Delhi, India, as officials announced on September 27.

The team already completed about 100 surgeries during a pilot phase, showing solid confidence from doctors and high demand from patients seeking robotic-assisted surgery.

Five skilled surgeons now operate the da Vinci system for tough cancer cases, including those in the rectum, esophagus, pancreas, urology, and gynecologic areas. It shines in precision-demanding procedures like low rectal surgeries, Whipple operations for pancreatic cancer, and complex chest surgeries. With this tech, the department tackles some of the hardest cancer surgeries head-on.

Patients get a big win: all these robotic-assisted cancer surgeries come free of charge. This setup promotes fair access for everyone, regardless of background, while cutting down on complications and speeding up recovery.

“This launch aligns with AIIMS Delhi’s goal to bring top-tier healthcare to all,” said Dr. M. Srinivas, the hospital’s director. “Cancer rates are climbing in India, and we need precise treatments more than ever. As a key referral center for tough cases, we’re offering these advanced options at no cost in a busy public hospital, removing money worries for patients.”

Robotic-assisted surgery changes the game for complex cancers. Patients enjoy smaller cuts, less bleeding, reduced pain, quicker healing, and fewer side effects, so they head home faster. Surgeons benefit from better views, more control, and pinpoint accuracy thanks to the da Vinci system.

“We’re raising the bar for oncology surgery in public hospitals and opening doors to innovative care nationwide,” added Dr. Sunil Kumar, head of the Department of Surgical Oncology.

Moving forward, the team aims to track results, fuel research, and share expertise with other surgeons. Handling high volumes of patients with this advanced technology positions AIIMS Delhi to shape best practices for cancer surgery across India.
