New Delhi: Air India said on Tuesday that a recent case—where a plane flew at least eight times after being found unairworthy—was “regrettable.” The airline has launched a thorough internal review to investigate the incident.
The Airbus A320 in question had been operated while its airworthiness licence was already expired. At least eight flights were conducted last month before the problem was uncovered and the aircraft was grounded. It remains out of service while the DGCA looks into the matter.
In India, the DGCA issues a Certificate of Airworthiness every year; renewal only happens when the aircraft meets safety standards. Aviation authorities say operating a plane without a valid licence or certificate is a serious offence.
In a statement, Air India said: “an incident involving one of our aircraft operating without an airworthiness review certificate is regrettable.” The company added that once the problem was noticed it was reported immediately to the DGCA. All staff involved in the decision have been suspended while the investigation continues. “We have started a comprehensive internal investigation and are cooperating fully with the regulator,” an Air India spokesperson told reporters.
The airline also reaffirmed its commitment to the highest standards of safety and operational integrity, adding that any breach of compliance rules is taken very seriously and is unacceptable to the organization.
Earlier this year, Air India Flight 171 crashed 32 seconds after take‑off from Ahmedabad en route to London. Of the 12 crew members and 229 passengers on board, only one passenger survived. On the ground, 19 people lost their lives and 67 others were seriously injured. The airline has said that 95 % of the families of the Dreamliner that crashed minutes after departure have received interim compensation.
