Exciting developments are brewing in India-China relations, with major airlines gearing up to restart direct flights between the two countries. Air India plans to resume its services to China by the end of this year, focusing on the popular Delhi-to-Shanghai route, according to sources who spoke to on Thursday.
India’s Civil Aviation Ministry shared the update on X, confirming that direct air links with China will kick off by late October 2025 as part of the winter flight schedule. This comes after ongoing talks between aviation officials, all aimed at easing tensions and boosting ties between the neighbors. The new routes promise better air connectivity, more people-to-people interactions, and a real push for economic partnerships—think smoother business deals and easier travel.
IndiGo isn’t sitting this out either. The low-cost carrier announced it’s bringing back flights to mainland China, starting with daily nonstop service from Kolkata to Guangzhou on October 26, 2025. Pending regulatory nods, IndiGo will soon launch direct Delhi-to-Guangzhou flights too. They’ll fly these routes using their efficient Airbus A320neo planes, which should open doors for cross-border trade, key business tie-ups, and a tourism boom between India and China.
This all ties back to a recent chat between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. During their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on August 31, the leaders highlighted the importance of direct flights and simpler visa processes to build stronger people-to-people connections.
