A top Samajwadi Party leader was hit with a Facebook ban, but the ban was lifted within a day.
The politician, Akhilesh Yadav, said the posts that led to the suspension were about the death of a journalist and a woman in Ballia, and that Facebook mis‑flagged them as “Adult Sexual Exploitation and Violence.”
What happened?
After Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav posted on his Facebook page about the journalist’s death and the suspicious death of a woman from Ballia, Facebook flagged the content under its community‑rules policy. The platform sent a suspension notice, citing adult sexual content and violence. Yadav quickly asked why his account was removed.
Yadav’s reply
“We were talking about the pressure on journalists, especially from the ruling BJP, and how they file FIRs and use other tricks to silence voices,” Yadav told reporters. He added that his focus remains on face‑to‑face interaction rather than social media domination.
Government stance
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited New Delhi’s railway station and clarified that the central government was not involved. “Facebook acts independently under its own policies. The government has no role in suspending user accounts,” Vaishnaw said.
Political fallout
The Samajwadi Party saw the ban as an attack on democratic rights. SP’s leader Fakhrul Hasan Chaand posted on X that the suspension was a blow to democracy. National Secretary Rajeev Rai also condemned the move, claiming it undermines India’s democratic system. “Blocking the leader of the country’s third‑largest party is not only condemnable but a blow to our democracy,” Rai wrote.
Bottom line
Facebook temporarily paused Yadav’s account over a content dispute. The platform restored the account a day later, citing policy enforcement. Meanwhile, the incident raised concerns over political pressure and digital freedom in India.
