Police chief Heena Khan stepped in to calm a heated crowd in Gwalior after a clash over a planned B.R. Ambedkar statue at the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Khan, the city’s Superintendent of Police, was seen chanting “Jai Jai Shri Ram” to try to soothe the mob of lawyers and supporters. “If calling the God’s name can bring peace, then it’s a good thing,” she said. She added that “all Indians are Sanatani and everyone has the right to speak.”
The city’s police set up a high‑level meeting that included inspectors general and deputy inspectors‑general. After talking with leaders of various political parties, Khan said the standoff largely calmed down. “We kept talking with the leaders, and the situation was diffused. Police were still on standby to protect public safety and keep daily life running,” she told .
A tense standoff erupted on October 15 when supporters of former High Court Bar Association President Anil Mishra clashed with police while heading to a temple for a “Holy Sunderkand” recital. Earlier that year, the court had approved a plan to install a statue of Dalit icon B.R. Ambedkar at the Gwalior bench. In March, a group of lawyers opposed to the statue held a protest inside the court, sparking a fight with a rival lawyer group supportive of Ambedkar’s memorial.
While Dalit organisations push for Ambedkar’s statue, another faction wants to erect a bust of former justice B.N. Rao, a constitutional expert, inside the High Court building. The conflict highlights deep divisions over how to honor India’s diverse traditions.
