New Delhi – The All India Judges Association (AIJA) has voiced strong alarm after a lawyer reportedly tried to undermine the dignity of the Supreme Court and its chief justice.
In a resolution it described the act as “unbecoming of the legal profession” and warned it violated the constitutional values of decorum, discipline and institutional integrity. The association said the incident bruised the core respect that keeps the bench‑bar relationship healthy and threatened the independence of the judiciary.
AIJA leaders, President Ajay Nathani and General Secretary Devender Kumar Jangala, urged all legal professionals to uphold the dignity and impartiality of the Supreme Court.
On Monday, 71‑year‑old lawyer Rakesh Kishore tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai while court was in session. Security arrested him and ejected him from the premises; he reportedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan.”
The Bar Council of India (BCI) reacted quickly. It suspended Kishore’s practice for violating the Advocates Act, 1961 and the BCI Rules that require lawyers to act with dignity, respect the judiciary and avoid the use of improper means in court. The BCI order bars him from appearing, pleading or practicing in any court, tribunal or authority in India and cancels any court or bar association permissions he holds.
The BCI has directed the Bar Council of Delhi to update its rolls and inform all courts and tribunals of the suspension.
The incident underscores the need for professional conduct and the importance of maintaining the integrity of India’s key legal institutions.
