Umar Ansari Gets Bail in Fake Documents Case Linked to Gangster Act
In a recent development from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to Umar Ansari, son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, on Friday. This comes in a high-profile case where Umar allegedly used fake documents and forged his mother Afsa Ansari’s signature to try and reclaim land seized under the Gangster Act.
Police had arrested Umar in Lucknow under the same Gangster Act, and he spent time behind bars before this bail approval. Ghazipur Superintendent of Police revealed that Umar created bogus papers for the confiscated property. Notably, Afsa Ansari had a Rs 50,000 bounty on her head, adding to the case’s intensity.
This bail decision follows another win for the Ansari family. Earlier, the Allahabad High Court overturned the conviction of Mukhtar Ansari’s other son, Abbas Ansari, the Mau MLA from Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party. Abbas had faced charges in a 2022 hate speech case, which led to a two-year jail term and a Rs 3,000 fine from the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Mau on May 31. That conviction cost him his Assembly seat on June 1. The High Court now restored his membership, calling it a fresh start.
Mukhtar Ansari’s elder brother, Sibgatullah Ansari, celebrated the ruling as a big win for justice. "This is the victory of justice and fairness," he said. "We always knew we were innocent and would get justice. Even speaking in court cases feels like a crime these days, but the judiciary proved justice is still alive. That’s why our country keeps moving forward."
For context, Mukhtar Ansari died on March 28, 2024, at Banda Medical College Hospital in Uttar Pradesh after a cardiac arrest. He faced multiple convictions, including a 10-year sentence in April 2023 for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, and a life term on March 13, 2024, for using forged documents to get an arms license back in 1990.
The Ansari family’s legal battles continue to grab headlines, highlighting ongoing issues with the Gangster Act and high-profile cases in Uttar Pradesh. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
