Amid festive season, Bengal BJP chief is busy with two key organisational assignments

As Durga Puja kicks off in West Bengal, drawing huge crowds for the state’s biggest festival, BJP leaders are juggling important party work. State president Samik Bhattacharya and other top officials are focusing on two key tasks right now.

First, they’re wrapping up the new state committee for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Party insiders say the central leadership wants this done soon after the festivities. Ideally, they’ll announce it between the end of Durga Puja this week and Diwali on October 18. That way, the fresh team can dive into preparations for next year’s big elections starting late this month.

A current BJP state committee member, speaking anonymously, shared that leaders like Bhattacharya are finalizing the list. “The goal is to get the new committee ready to hit the ground running,” the member said.

At the same time, BJP is crafting a strong counter-strategy against the Trinamool Congress (TMC), West Bengal’s ruling party. TMC has ramped up campaigns across the state on two hot topics: the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and claims of harassment against Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states.

The anonymous BJP member explained that while state leaders have responded to these issues before, it’s time for a full grassroots pushback. “Central leaders want us to launch a detailed counter-narrative right away to reach every corner of West Bengal,” he added.

TMC slams the SIR as a sneaky way to bring in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and target locals. But BJP fires back, calling it a plot by TMC to shield illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators who’ve snuck onto West Bengal’s voter lists.

On the harassment claims, BJP plans to flip the script. They’ll spotlight how industrial backwardness under TMC has pushed thousands—lakhs, in local terms—of Bengali workers from West Bengal to migrate to other states for jobs and better lives. This move aims to shift focus to local economic woes during the heated political season.
