Union Minister Amit Shah shared his heartbreak Saturday over a deadly stampede at actor and TVK chief Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The chaotic crowd surge left 31 people dead and many others hurt, turning what should have been an exciting election campaign event into tragedy.
Shah posted on X, saying he’s “deeply pained by the tragic loss of lives in a stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu.” He offered “heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased” and prayed for strength to help them through the grief, along with a quick recovery for the injured.
The incident unfolded Saturday evening when a massive turnout at the rally caused overcrowding. Reports say some attendees fainted amid the crush, sparking panic that led to the stampede. Victims rushed to nearby hospitals as emergency teams worked to help.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in earlier that day, calling the Tamil Nadu rally stampede “deeply saddening.” In his X post, he said his “thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones” and wished them strength during this tough time. He added prayers for a fast recovery for everyone injured in the Karur incident.
AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami voiced shock over the loss of lives at the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) event. He described the news of more than 29 deaths and others fainting from the crowd chaos as “shocking and distressing.” Palaniswami extended deepest condolences to the families and directed former Minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar to visit the hospital personally and provide aid to those receiving treatment.
As investigations continue into what went wrong at the Vijay rally in Karur, leaders across India are uniting in support for the victims and their loved ones in this heartbreaking Tamil Nadu stampede.
