Union Home Minister Amit Shah opened a new MLA housing complex in Gandhinagar on the lucky day of Bhai Dooj. The state’s Roads & Buildings Department built the 28,576‑square‑meter development in Sector 17 to replace the old, cramped apartments that had served Gujarat’s legislators since the 1970s.
The grand ceremony drew the top leaders of Gujarat – Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi and Deputy Speaker Jetha Ahir – plus many senior officials and local dignitaries. Shah walked through the finished units, praising the new floor plans and modern facilities.
Each flat is a spacious 3‑bedroom home, about 170 square metres of carpeted space. Inside you find an office with a waiting area, a servant’s room, kitchen, dining room, living room with balcony, dressing room and two toilets. All 216 units are fully furnished – 180 come with both fixed and loose furniture, the rest only with fixed furnishings. Two lifts per block and separate parking spaces (one basement, one ground‑floor spot) keep traffic smooth.
The complex is packed with amenities that match the needs of busy legislators. The campus features a large garden, a 300‑person multi‑purpose hall, a community hall, a gymnasium and an indoor game area, plus a swimming pool, a canteen/dining hall, a medical clinic and a provision store. Two reinforced concrete roads inside the complex help with flood control and drainage.
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Catch the Rain” water‑conservation policy, the community has rain‑water harvesting structures. Six hundred new trees were planted around the campus to boost green cover and support sustainable living.
The move follows the state’s earlier efforts to upgrade MLA housing. The old single‑room units dates back to 1970‑71, while larger two‑bedroom houses in Sector 21 were built in 1990‑91. The new complex, fully opened today, offers a considerable lift in living standards for Gujarat’s political leaders.
After the ribbon cutting, Amit Shah toured the completed blocks, commenting on the state‑of‑the‑art amenities and the project’s alignment with environmental goals. Gandhinagar Mayor Mira Patel, local MLAs, BJP city president Ashish Dave, municipal councillors and department staff were also present to celebrate the new chapter in legislative housing.
