Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu shared his deep sadness on Sunday over a deadly stampede at actor and TVK leader Vijay’s public rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident claimed 38 lives, including eight children and 16 women, turning a lively political event into a heartbreaking tragedy.

In a post on X, Naidu wrote, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede at Karur, Tamil Nadu. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” His words highlight the shock rippling across neighboring states after news of the Karur rally stampede spread.

The Jana Sena Party echoed this grief, posting their own condolences on X. They called the event a “tragic stampede incident at Karur rally,” noting that preliminary reports showed 33 deaths, with six children among them. The party urged the Tamil Nadu government to step up medical care for the injured, saying, “I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also spoke out, expressing immense sorrow over the lives lost in the crowd crush. In an X post and a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, he confirmed the toll and stressed that those hurt are getting immediate treatment at Karur Government Hospital. “The reports of lives lost due to being trapped in a crowd in Karur are causing immense sorrow,” he said, adding a call for everyone to cooperate with rescue and medical teams.

Vijay, the TVK chief and popular actor whose rally sparked the chaos, shared his raw pain on X. “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow,” he posted. He offered deepest sympathies to the families and prayed for quick recovery for hospital patients, showing the personal toll on the rally’s organizer.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin responded swiftly with action. He announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each family of the victims—now confirmed at 36 deaths—and Rs 1 lakh aid for those receiving treatment. To get to the bottom of the Karur stampede causes, Stalin set up a one-member inquiry commission led by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. The commission will investigate thoroughly and report back to the government.

In his statement, Stalin said he was “deeply shocked and pained” by the loss, especially of the children and women. “These priceless lives lost have shaken all our hearts,” he added, promising top-notch medical care and full government support for those affected by the Tamil Nadu rally tragedy.
