BJP MP Anurag Thakur has called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to step up and handle the Karur stampede aftermath with urgency. As part of an NDA-BJP fact-finding team that visited the area, Thakur wants a full report on the deadly incident that killed 41 people during a massive rally.
The chaos unfolded on September 27 in Karur, Tamil Nadu, at a public event led by TVK chief and actor Vijay. A huge crowd turned out, but poor crowd management led to the tragic stampede, leaving many injured. Thakur’s letter to Stalin demands clear answers on what went wrong, including the main causes, how local authorities planned for the crowd, any key lapses, and steps the state plans to take to avoid future Karur stampede-like tragedies.
In the letter, Thakur specifically asks for details on the sequence of events, crowd control measures by police and officials, initial findings on what contributed to the disaster, and the Tamil Nadu government’s safety plans for upcoming gatherings. He urges Stalin to direct officials to deliver this report quickly.
On September 30, the eight-member NDA-BJP delegation stopped by a government hospital in Karur to check on the injured. The team, led by BJP MP Hema Malini as convenor, included MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Tejasvi Surya, Braj Lal, Rekha Sharma, Anurag Thakur, Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde, and Telugu Desam Party’s Putta Mahesh Kumar. They talked with victims’ families, offered support, and heard their concerns firsthand.
Meanwhile, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court will soon hear cases tied to the Karur stampede. This includes petitions for anticipatory bail from TVK General Secretary Anand and Nirmal Kumar, as investigations continue into the rally’s organization and the crowd management failures.
