Indian Army’s First Freight Train Rolls Through Kashmir: Boost for Troops and Apple Farmers
In a big win for Jammu and Kashmir, the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project hit a major milestone. On September 12-13, the Indian Army ran its very first dedicated freight train from BD Bari to Anantnag. This train hauled 753 metric tonnes of essential winter supplies for army units in the region, as shared by Defence Ministry spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal.
"This move changes how the army stocks up for winter," Lt Col Bartwal explained. "It shows our push to stay ready in the tough Himalayan terrain." The USBRL, a game-changer for Kashmir’s connectivity, now supports both military needs and everyday life.
What makes this special? The train didn’t just help the army—it doubled up for locals too. On its way back, it carried truckloads of Kashmiri apples from Budgam railway station to Adarsh Nagar in Delhi. J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off this parcel train, calling it a "big step for apple growers" to reach markets across India without road hassles.
Kashmir’s apple farmers have faced huge losses this season. Landslides and floods blocked the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, leaving fruit rotting in trucks. Now, with this freight train service, they can ship produce quickly and safely via rail. "It brings economic relief and secures livelihoods," Lt Col Bartwal added.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the Railway Ministry for the initiative but pointed out it’s just the start. "One train isn’t enough," he said on social media. "Kashmir Valley’s fruit growers have suffered massive losses, and consignments are still stuck due to the highway blockade. We need more such trains to help everyone."
This effort highlights the Indian Army’s broader role in nation-building. By blending military logistics with civilian support, the USBRL strengthens Kashmir’s resilience, boosts connectivity, and drives prosperity. It’s a smart way to use rail infrastructure for troops’ winter preparedness and local farmers’ success.
